Surfingin Arugam Bay

Located on the east coast of the island, Arugam Bay is a historic settlement that is now dominated by surf tourism, as the curvature of the bay, combined with the tides and the reefs, make it perfect to ride 2-metre-high waves out in the bay area. It is an international surfing competition venue, which means it is a destination more suited for advanced surfers.

The best time to surf in Arugam Bay is from April to October, while July, August and September are considered to be the very best. The morning period is ideal for surfing here, as the wind generally swings on-shore after about 12 noon during this season. The areas that are popular among the surfing community here are the Main Point, Pottuvil Point and Crocodile Rock.

Assuming that you are a pro surfer, you most probably have your own board, however, if you do not, you can easily rent or buy one here. Surf lessons too can be arranged for those who are still in the early stages of their surf journey.
