Things to do

The beginning of February is marked by Independence Day celebrations on the 4 th of the month. Official celebrations are usually confined to the commercial area in the city of Colombo. February is a great time to visit the wildlife parks in the east of the country, as the dry conditions bring the animals out to watering holes, increasing your chances of seeing rarer species. Conditions for beach activities such as sunbathing, swimming, surfing, snorkelling and diving are great in the southern and western coasts, but note that it can get rather hot. The central highlands remain cool and dry in February and are lush after the rains. Excursions in rainforests and parks are a good idea at this time of year. Whale watching is also possible in the south.

Cultural and heritage tours that showcase the country’s rich history can be experienced during this time. Foodies can expect to enjoy some great Sri Lankan and international cuisine, while spa enthusiasts can relax and rejuvenate with some Ayurvedic massages and treatments.

Where to go

Wildlife parks such as Yala, Udawalawe and Wilpattu are ideal to visit at this time of year. If your priority is sun, sand and sea, you should head over to the coastal towns of Galle, Colombo, Bentota, Weligama, Mirissa and Negombo. Whale watching excursions can be undertaken in Mirissa. Stick to the southern and southwestern coasts for snorkelling, diving and surfing at this time of year.

Head to Horton Plains, Moon Plains, Kanneliya or Sinharaja for hikes and treks. You could also scale the famous Adam’s Peak in February. Experience the country’s rich culture and ancient history in Sigiriya, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Kandy.
