SoloAdventure in Ella

Visit Ella and experience a world of adventure, culture and leisure with fellow travellers. From hiking up majestic mountain peaks to quaint cafés and restaurants, there is much to do in this small town in the highlands.

Hiking

On the top of your list should be hikes up the many mountains that surround Ella. Should you be looking for an easy hike, Little Adam’s Peak is the ideal mountain to climb. Located about a kilometre away from the town, it is easy to summit, due to the clear stairway path. The summit allows you to witness the majestic Ravana Ella waterfall from afar, in addition to the famous Ella Rock.

The Ella Rock is a mountain that is further away from the main town and is more difficult to climb, as its trails are in a wilderness sanctuary. However, start your journey in the wee hours of the morning and witness the majestic sunrise at the summit. Certainly, a rewarding end to the arduous climb.

Culture

Most of the hiking trails in Ella will also take you through some historically interesting places that are closely connected to legends and myths of the island. The Ravana Ella waterfall and the Ravana Cave are directly linked to the epic mythical battle between the Raksha King Ravana of Lanka and Prince Rama of India. One of the natural pools made by the cascade is considered to be the very place in which Princess Sita, the abducted wife of Rama, bathed. Moreover, there is also reason to believe that the Ravana Cave is not just an ordinary cave, but that it possesses a vast tunnel system.

Although a significant distance away from Ella, the Dhowa Raja Maha Viharaya is also a location of interest, as it is connected to the history of King Walagamba, who was driven out of the Anuradhapura Kingdom invaders from South India.

Zip Lining

If you are looking for a rush of adrenaline, then Ella is the best place to get it. Zip lining from one mountain range to another has become pretty popular with locals and visitors alike. Soaring 82metres high from ground level at a speed of 80kmh, is a pretty exhilarating experience!

Sightseeing

Ella is situated in a rather picturesque location. A trip to the famous Nine Arch Bridge, a walk along the tea trails and visits to tea factories are just some of the things you can do. The small mountain-town is also home to a number of bars, restaurants, and hostels that are great places to enjoy some Sri Lankan cuisine and meet fellow travellers.
